The Issues

We want to strengthen these aspects of the Chugiak-Eagle River district.

Community

Many District 2 homeowners and business owners have felt exploited due to the taxes inflicted upon them. Both home and business owners feel that the MOA is too large to function at full capacity. With the confusing lack of direction from the MOA detaching to become smaller jurisdictions to focus on the community and what benefits them on a more personal level. Having a smaller government would be beneficial as it would be more responsive and representative to the community. There would be more options and better public safety such as troopers, fire departments, and medical access.

Infrastructure

With the smaller self-government plan that Eaglexit has, it creates a more involved community which in turn would affect the infrastructure of District 2. Detaching from MOA would create a smaller jurisdiction. The community would be deciding and having control over taxes and regulations. The community tax level would be lower due to the smaller district having less population and more control from the better represented local government. The taxes on home and business owners would be less bloated so the community would spend more which would create economic growth among District 2.

Education

Eaglexit’s goal for detachment includes a focus on improving the future of our children and current students of District 2. Bob Griffen explains these goals in his article,  Designing Education.
“If I were to design a K-12 education program from the ground up for a community the size of Eagle River I would start with a system that is centered on leveraging technology, along with choice and competition to produce excellent student outcomes at the lowest taxpayer cost… In my vision of the new Eagle River School District, school principals and staff would be given increased autonomy to create magnet programs for every individual school and parents would be granted blanket zone exemptions to put their child in the program that best suits their child’s needs.”
